Common Fears — Answered Honestly

We understand you may have questions and concerns. Here are honest answers to help you feel informed.

Will I get in trouble for asking for help?

No. Asking for support shows care and responsibility.

Will DCS automatically take my baby?

No, not necessarily, and it’s not automatic. Every situation is different, but Jacob’s Hope is there to support and advocate for you. We help you understand your rights, the process, and possible outcomes so you feel informed and empowered. Babies are usually discharged to their family when Mom was actively engaged with our prenatal program!

Will my baby be born addicted?

Babies are not born addicted. Some babies experience withdrawal, which is a medical condition that can be treated with proper care and support. They are not addicted.

Will my baby definitely go through withdrawal?

Not always. Every pregnancy and baby is different. We help families understand what to expect and how to prepare.

How long does withdrawal last?

Withdrawal looks different for every baby. Babies are usually observed for at least the first five days of life, since symptoms do not always appear right away. Some babies only need observation, extra comfort, and snuggles, while others need additional time and medical care. Babies stay an average of eight days at Jacob’s Hope, and families are involved in care and discharge planning throughout their stay.

Is it safe to be on MAT during pregnancy?

Yes. Medically assisted treatment during pregnancy is evidence-based care and the standard of treatment for opioid use disorder. Medications like methadone and buprenorphine are commonly used and considered safe in pregnancy. These medications help keep moms stable and support healthier outcomes for babies.

Am I a bad mom for needing help?

No, absolutely not. Asking for help means you are putting your baby first.

What if I am scared or unsure what to do next?

That is okay. You do not need all the answers. You only need to take the first step.
